You do not need to learn to write scripts from scratch to start using them. You can start by learning to inspect, run, and adapt the commands and scripts that R-Instat or others provide. This makes the transition from menus and dialogs to commands and scripts approachable.

The chapter follows a gradual route. First, you use R-Instat’s “halfway dialogs” to build commands with clearly labelled buttons. The function names are provided by the keys, and the parameters can be shown when needed. Next, you view and run a script that R-Instat creates from an ordinary dialog. Finally, you use a script from the R-Instat script library, the partner to the data library used in the first two chapters.

The aim is to learn to read scripts and make small, purposeful changes to produces what you need. This is similar to returning to a dialog and adjusting the options. The difference is that here you work directly with the command or script. The code is less intimidating when you do not have to write it yourself.
